A Learning Year Program can allow a school to offer additional learning opportunities for students. This training section is intended to sketch out some of the issues surrounding the LYP concept, particularly as it has been addressed in a Minnesota charter school context. While there are many potential benefits, there are also challenges. Before deciding to plunge ahead with a LYP, consider the additional work it will bring, particularly in recordkeeping and tracking of student learning. While the Family Learning Center has had an overall positive experience running a LYP, the High School for Recording Arts (another Community Learning Center-model charter school in St. Paul) recently decided to terminate its LYP. Reasons for HSRA's decision were the increasing reporting requirements, coupled with lower enrollment during the summer, which limits the additional revenue the LYP drives.
